I've noticed lately that I do best on trips when I keep a specific verse in mind. The rough part is, there's not a lot of content out there that doesn't scream the classic "God has a plan." Because of that, I decided to compile my own list to keep handy while traveling. 1. Matthew 11:28 "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." I find it difficult to get good sleep and take hearty naps on trips. There's so much to see and hitting the pillow isn't appealing when you could be out exploring. Yet, God commands us to make time for rest and be dependent on Him for energy. 2. Psalm 37:5 "Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will act." I like to say I'm spontaneous, but when it is 8pm and I don't have a room for the night, you best believe I got the nerves. Around that time, I remember who brought me on that trip. He's not going to abandon you. Believe in His power and let him safely lead you through your anxiety. You will sleep somewhere. 3. Psalm 144:1 "...my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle" Have you ever been sick on a trip? Got a flat tire? Confronted with an uncomfortable situation? It's hard to remember our rock is overseeing our tiny footprints. He's given us hands to buy medicine. Fingers to fix a flat. Knowledge to calmly approach a heavy problem and seek Him in prayer for any concerns. 4. Proverbs 17:22 "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." One delayed flight and I can find myself in a sour mood. Try to remember that extra time spent in the airport won't kill your trip. You're going somewhere. How many people wish they could be on the next flight out? Let's build some thick skin and say, "God what do you want me to do for these next few hours?" 5. Proverbs 19:20-21 "Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand." Conversations in coffee shops matter. Locals are full of wisdom. Be brave and ask where to go, Pinterest doesn't know it all. Although, don't go crazy and make a list of 20 things you have to see. Leave room for God to do His work too. God will take you where there's purpose. 6. Philippians 4:11-12 "...for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance, and need." I may find this verse the most valuable in this list. The word content sticks out to me like a Christmas tree star topper. Personally, it has been a struggle to walk alongside this word. However, I've learned that pretending to be happy doesn't count as contentment. Being content is being satisfied. You don't have to be happy to be satisfied. Calling life what it is at the moment, will make appreciating the gritty a little easier. 7. Psalm 139:23 "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." I feel like growth is always tugging at my shoulder when I travel. God's able to test me in a thousand areas at once. This may be the most important time to surrender. To peel off your earthly nature and rely solely on what He's taught you.
I'm sure there's a bucket ton more.
